Letter Writing and My Writing

Letter Writing

To me, letter writing is more of a formal practice. I tend to associate letters with major holidays or with official documents, as mail is usually the way we receive holiday cards or bills. But there is also another side of letter writing, something less formal and more lighthearted. For example, when my sister went to sleep-away camp, she would send postcards updating us on the activities, or after my birthday, I would write thank you notes to the people who gave me gifts. I think the second part of letter writing is what I am most excited about in this course. I am excited to see the informal part of letters and use them to learn more about people’s lives and their relationships. As for concerns, I am worried that I will not be able to adjust to the writing style of college, or that I will feel overwhelmed with the requirements of assignments.

My Writing Process

In my writing process, I like that I have developed a system in how I go about writing an assignment. I usually start by outlining what I want to say, then, without focusing specifically on the quality of the writing, I begin to write the assignment. After the “brain dump” of writing, I go back and polish it up, whether that means rearranging sentences or correcting grammar. To improve my writing, I would like to learn more vocabulary that can enhance my sentences, as well as learn better ways to transition between topics. Hopefully, I will grow as a writer by listening to my peers and our class writing assistant. I will also do my best to learn about different writing styles that might work for me.
